How To: Get Total Control Over Android's Volume Slider Precision

How To: Get Total Control Over Android's Volume Slider Precision
On most Android devices, the various volume levels are comprised of either 7 or 15 steps between minimum and maximum. For voice-call volume, alarms, and notifications alike, 7 presses of a volume button will bring you all the way from silent to full-blast. With media controls, you get 15 steps between mute and max.The trouble here is these two ranges can end up being either insufficient or cumbersome. While listening to music on a set of headphones, volume level 14 might not be loud enough, but raising it to 15 could result in a maxed-out, distorted sound. At the same time, having too many increments for something that requires less fine-tuning like alarm volume is just inconvenient. So developer Kuba Kalamarz created an Xposed module to put an end to these issues. Unlike past volume-increment adjustment mods like XVolume (which we've covered in the past for the Nexus 7), VolumeSteps+ allows you to adjust the amount of steps for every system volume function. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
PrerequisitesRooted Android device Xposed Framework installed Unknown Sources enabled

Step 1: Install VolumeSteps+To be clear, this module does not boost or increase the overall volume of your phone. It simply allows you to fine-tune the existing range of volume a bit more. From your Xposed Installer app, head to the Download section and search VolumeSteps+, then tap the top result. From here, swipe over to the Versions tab and hit the Download button next to the most recent entry. Android's installer interface should automatically come up at this point, so tap Install on the next screen. When that process has finished, you'll get a notification from Xposed telling you that the module hasn't been activated yet and that a reboot is needed. Tap the Activate and reboot button on this notification to take care of both requirements at one time.

Step 2: Adjust Your Volume StepsWhen you get back up, open VolumeSteps+ from your app drawer. The module will inform you that any changes you make to your volume increments will require a reboot before they take effect. Each volume category has its own menu entry. Tap one that you want to adjust, then use the slider that appears to fine-tune your volume steps. When you're satisfied with your changes, press OK. The process is the same for any other volume category that you'd like to adjust. The slider ranges from 5 steps to 90, so you'll surely find an increment that's right for each category.

Step 3: Configure Additional Options & RebootAs an added bonus, VolumeSteps+ also allows you to disable the Safe Headset Volume warning message that appears after you've plugged in a pair of headphones on some devices. If you don't think that you'll need to make volume increment adjustments in the future, you can hide the VolumeSteps+ icon from your app drawer. Just untick the box next to Show Launcher icon, and the icon will disappear the next time you restart your launcher (but will still be accessible through the Xposed Installer app). When you're satisfied with your selections, simply reboot your phone and your new volume steps will be in place. How many volume steps did you choose for your various volume modes? Let us know in the comments section below, as well as on Facebook and Twitter.

How To: Preserve Battery Life on Your Apple iPad Mini

How To: Preserve Battery Life on Your Apple iPad Mini

Apple has begun selling their new iPad mini at stores around the world starting today. The mini, a smaller and cheaper alternative to the larger iPad, has a starting price of $329 and is expected to sell around 1 to 1.5 million units in the first weekend, far below the 3 million iPad 3s sold last March (who all probably want their money back). Something that's sure to be brought up in the following days, as with most new devices, is the battery life. As we previously provided you tips on saving battery life with the iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy S III, we now bring you a few tips on how to extend battery life on the new iPad mini.
Extend Your iPad Mini's Battery LifeNot only are these tips affective on the iPad mini, but universally on most smartphones and tablets.Toggle off unnecessary settings. If you're not using Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, turn them off. Disable push notifications. Turn off any applications that you might not need at a constant rate, like Instagram, Twitter, or Mail. Instead, you can just check each application periodically for any updates. Some, like Mail, you can even set to check for data less frequently.. Turn off sounds. Having sounds on can decrease the battery. I toggle the sound switch on silent and use vibrate for most notifications. Adjust brightness. Change and lower the brightness according to your surroundings. Auto-brightness is turned on by default, so make sure to manually adjust the brightness to a lower setting. Clear running applications. Every so often, double-tap on the home button and clear all the applications running in the background on your phone. After a while, they clog up the CPU so make sure to wipe them every so often. Smart charge your device. Run the battery all the way down to 0 every so often (10-15 charge cycles). Apple recommends doing it once a month. YouTube user Milkerz5 explains all of these battery-saving tweaks for the iPad mini's lithium-polymer battery in his video below. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
Some other tips:Lock your iPad mini. If you're not using, lock it by pressing the Sleep/Wake button. You can also set the Auto-Lock interval so it will turn off by itself more quickly when inactive by going to Settings -> General -> Auto-Lock and changing the interval. Turn off cellular data. If you really need to save some battery life while you browse the web via Wi-Fi, then go to Settings -> Cellular and turn your Cellular Data off. For cellular models only. Turn on Airplane Mode. If you're in low- or no-coverage area, why not just turn on Airplane Mode to prevent your iPad mini from working too hard trying to find a cellular signal (cellular models only) or connecting to Wi-Fi. It's not doing you any good anyway. Might as well save some juice. Minimize location services. Go to Settings -> General -> Location Services and make sure only the apps you're currently using have location services enabled. Got any more tips for saving battery power on the iPad mini?

ProtonMail 101: How to Customize Swipe Actions for Messages

There are a couple swipe gestures in ProtonMail for Android and iOS that let you swipe right on an email to mark it as spam or swipe left to trash it. If you don't get a lot of spam or don't delete a lot of messages, it's easy enough to changes these gestures to perform another action. To get started, just open up ProtonMail, sign in, and tap on the hamburger icon (it's three stacked horizontal lines) in the top left of the app. When the side menu appears, select "Settings." Scroll down until you see the Swipe Actions (Android) or Message Swipe Actions (iOS). Here, you'll have two options to choose from:Swipe Left to Right (aka swipe right) Swipe Right to Left (aka swipe left) The available settings on iOS using an iPhone X. Tap on the gesture you want to change, then simply choose a new option from the list. You can choose between trashing a message, marking a message as spam, archiving a message, or starring a message. Keep in mind that any changes you make here will apply to all of your devices using ProtonMail. So, if you change the swipe gestures on your iPhone, they will also change on your Android tablet. The available settings on Android using a Google Pixel. Don't Miss: Change Your ProtonMail Display Name That Shows Up in Emails

Option 1: TrashMessages you trash will be moved to the "Trash" folder. However, once you're in the "Trash" folder, you will not be able to use the swipe gesture again to un-trash it. In fact, swipe gestures don't work at all in the "Trash" folder on Android, but the secondary gesture will work on iOS.To un-trash a message, you will have to go into the message itself to move it manually. On Android, you can also long-press on a message in the "Trash" folder, then hit the folder icon to move it to the "Inbox" or another folder. However, in iOS, you can only do that to move it into a custom folder.

Option 2: SpamWhen you junk a message with the swipe gesture, it will be moved to the "Spam" folder. Once inside the "Spam" folder, you can't use the swipe gesture to mark it as not a spam email. On Android, no swipe gestures work at all in the "Spam" folder, but the secondary gesture works on iOS.If you want to mark a message as not spam, you will have to go into the message itself to move it out of the folder. On Android, you can also long-press on a message in the "Spam" folder, then hit the folder icon to move it to the "Inbox" or another folder. However, in iOS, you can only do that to move it into a custom folder.

Option 3: ArchiveEmails you archive with a swipe gesture will be moved to the "Archive" folder. Likewise, you can't use the gesture again to un-archive it. However, secondary gestures will work on both Android and iOS, and the archiving swipe gesture on Android will turn into a trashing gesture, no matter if your other gesture is for trashing or not.You have to un-archive messages in the "Archive" folder in the message itself. On Android, you can also long-press on a message in the "Archive" folder, then hit the folder icon to move it to the "Inbox" or another folder. However, in iOS, you can only do that to move it into a custom folder.

Option 4: StarWhen staring a message, a star will be added to it and it will appear in the "Starred" folder. However, you cannot use the same swipe gesture to un-star a message on iOS, only on Android. That has to be done manually in the message itself on iOS, even though the swipe gesture appears (it won't un-star it). Also, if you're in the "Starred" folder, the swipe gesture you have set to "Star" will do nothing at all on iOS, and on Android, no swipe gestures work in this folder. Likely, ProtonMail will update its apps to function better with swipe gestures, fixing some of the issues with swipes not working in certain folders or not working at all. So stay tuned. How To: How All Your Friends Are Adding Fun & Dramatic Zooms to Their Instagram Stories
You see them all over your Instagram Stories feed — post after post, video after video of dramatic, silly, or otherwise fun zooms. Your friends are showing off their lives through the lens of a Hollywood blockbuster, and you can do the same. Luckily, it's quite easy to accomplish, whether you're running iOS or Android. While your feed might be chock full of different zooms, it wasn't always that way. When Instagram first started playing around with dramatic zooms, there was only one effect we could use — Superzoom — whose original intent was to mimic the dramatic chipmunk meme, with no added on-screen effects in place. It's basically the whip (or snap) zoom effect, a classic trope in westerns and kung fu films such as A Fistful of Dollars and Enter the Dragon, respectively.Since Instagram first introduced the Superzoom effect in Stories, Superzoom has become the generic name for Instagram's collection of dramatic zooms, which houses 10 different effects right now, rather than a single effect itself.Don't Miss: How to Zoom In & Out of Instagram Stories

Step 1: Find the Superzoom EffectsIf you know how to use the story camera, you already know how to use Superzoom. First, activate the story camera by either swiping right on the home screen, tapping the camera button in the top left, or on the "+ Your Story" icon.Next, swipe on the carousel at the bottom of the display until you find "Superzoom." It should be two spaces to the right of "Normal."

Step 2: Make the Magic HappenOnce selected, take a look at the new carousel above the shutter button. Here, you can select from one of currently 10 options for your zoom: Surprise, Bummer, Dramatic, Nope, Bounce, TV Show, Hearts, Paparazzi, Beats, and Fire. When you choose one, you have two options to record. First, you can hold down the shutter button, which will allow you to record until you either lift your finger off the shutter or you reach the maximum record time. Second, you can tap the shutter button, and Instagram will automatically start and stop recording for you.Just know, Instagram might not play through the entire effect with the second method, and you might exceed the effect with the first, so it's best to play around with each effect to get a hang of the different timings. From left to right: Surprise, Bummer, and Dramatic effects. That's all there is to it! Our only additional advice is to check in with Superzoom when you can. While Instagram hasn't refreshed its zooms lineup in some time, social media apps like to keep things fresh, often at the expense of older features. Don't be surprised if your favorite zoom disappears unexpectedly, only to be replaced by a slew of new effects.Superzoom is just one tool to help you create intriguing and engaging stories. In fact, there are tons of other features out there spread over dozens of apps that can take your stories to the next level. You'll find you don't need to stick with one app's story maker to create the best content possible.Don't Miss: All the Apps You Need to Make That Perfect StoryFollow Gadget Hacks on Pinterest, Reddit, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Sign up for Gadget Hacks' daily newsletter or weekly Android and iOS updates Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

How To: Take Live Photos of FaceTime Video Calls (& Protect Yourself from Getting Recorded)

How To: Take Live Photos of FaceTime Video Calls (& Protect Yourself from Getting Recorded)
When you're taking a video in the Camera app on your iPhone, there's a little white shutter button in the corner that lets you take a still image while you're filming. Apple brought that same concept over to the FaceTime app in iOS 11, iOS 12, and higher, so you can take Live Photos of your friends during video chats.FaceTime, which was first released back in 2010, was an instant hit and very much still is. While being able to see and talk to your friends and relatives seamlessly is fantastic, it's always been difficult to capture and share moments with those not in the video call itself.Sure, you could take a typical screenshot, but there's a delay between the time the screenshot buttons are pressed together and when the screenshot is taken. That means whoever you're FaceTiming could have stopped doing the memorable or embarrassing deed worth capturing. Plus, it's pretty easy to mess up a simple screenshot and close out of the app or lock your iPhone instead.Don't Miss: How to Take Screenshots on the iPhone X, XS, XS Max & XR Apple fixed this issue with an on-screen button you can tap that instantly captures a Live Photo of your friend or family member's camera. Let's check out how to use it below on iOS 11.0 through 11.4.1, as well as iOS 12.1.1 and higher. (Apple, for an undisclosed reason (or accident), removed this feature in iOS 12 through 12.1.)
Step 1: Make Sure Everyone Is on a Compatible iOS VersionFor this to work, both you and the person you are FaceTiming with will need to have either iOS 11.0–11.4.1 or iOS 12.1.1 and higher installed. If you FaceTime with someone running iOS 12.0–12.1 or iOS 10.3.3 or below, the capture button will be grayed out and unusable, and tapping on it will say the other user needs the option enabled. However, it's also important to note that iOS 11 users can take Live Photos of other iOS 11 users, and iOS 12 users can take Live Photos of other iOS 12 users, but an iOS 12 user cannot take a Live Photo of an iOS 11 user and vice versa. We have not tested all versions against each other, but it's best to always be on the latest update to ensure compatibility. It's also possible that iOS 11 users can only FaceTime with iOS 11 users and macOS High Sierra 10.13 while iOS 12 can do so with iOS 12 users and macOS Mojave 10.14 and higher. We have not tested version compatibility from iOS to macOS, so just keep this in mind.

Step 2: Pick Your Victim & Give Them a CallStart off by picking a friend that does silly or goofy things on FaceTime, then give them a call. Once in the video call, you'll see the white-and-bright capture button on the lower left-hand side. Group FaceTime calls don't count, as the feature is only available in one-on-one conversations. If you're running an iOS 11 version and it's grayed out, the other user is not using a compatible iOS version or has disabled the feature, so you won't be able to take a Live Photo of them.On iOS 12.1.1 and higher, the button will only be grayed out when you disable the feature on your end. So it may appear as if you can take a Live Photo of the other user, but doing so will still give a "FaceTime Photos must be enabled on both devices to use this feature" warning.Don't Miss: How to Use FaceTime's Group Chat on Your iPhone

Step 3: Catch Them in the ActOnce your FaceTime video call is in motion, wait for whoever you're calling to do something worth sharing and hit the white dot-in-a-circle button on the bottom left. Both you and they will see a brief toast message stating that a FaceTime Live Photo was taken, while only you will find a saved Live Photo within your Photos app. The cool part about this is that it's almost as though you took the photo using the other person's front-facing camera. There's no call button in the Live Photo, no mute option, and best of all, your picture won't be in the top right-hand corner. Plus, the Live Photo you save will also have the audio attached, so you can get any funny spoken moments with the visuals. The examples below are between two iOS 11 users, each took a Live Photo.Don't Miss: The 7 Best New Features for Live Photos in iOS 11 for iPhones

How to Protect Yourself from FaceTime Live PhotosThere's a straightforward way to prevent someone from taking a FaceTime Live Photo of you — just turn off the Live Photos option in the Settings app under FaceTime. However, with the setting off, you will also not be able to take a Live Photo of someone else during FaceTime since both participants need it activated.Turning FaceTime Live Photos off doesn't mean you're completely safe from someone snagging a pic of your call — regular screenshots can still be taken without you being alerted.
What Do You Think of This New Feature? On iOS 11, the only thing you'll have to get used to is the way you switch from front to rear camera since the Live Photos button took the "switch camera" button's place. It's not gone entirely, it's just hiding under your thumbnail image, and all you have to do is tap on it to switch to the rear camera. If you have iOS 12, there's a "flip" button that's fairly obvious.Don't Miss: 100+ Cool New iOS 12 Features You Didn't Know AboutFollow Gadget Hacks on Pinterest, Reddit, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Sign up for Gadget Hacks' daily newsletter or weekly Android and iOS updates Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

The iPhone X is one of the most beautiful phones ever made, but the aesthetics stop just short of perfect due to one thing: That notch. It was a necessary evil since Apple had to incorporate a front-facing camera somewhere, plus it houses all the sensors for Face ID, but that doesn't change the fact that it looks a bit goofy.
