How To: All of the Ways You Can Use 3D Touch on Your iPhone
One feature in iOS you're likely underutilizing is 3D Touch, a highly useful, unique tool for iPhones ever since it first appeared on the iPhone 6S. Apple's pressure-sensitive interactivity gives iOS an extra layer of functionality, which can be clearly seen across the entirety of your device. From the lock screen to the home screen to the apps in between, there are plenty of ways to use 3D Touch. In this reference guide, we'll mainly focus on how Apple implements 3D Touch across the system and in their apps. Since its an Apple-made feature, most stock iOS apps and features use 3D Touch in some way. Not all third-party apps support 3D Touch, and there are many discrepancies with how different third-party apps utilize the feature, so it would be impossible to go over every third-party app.And while you can use 3D Touch in iOS 11's new Control Center, we left those actions off this list because you don't technically need 3D Touch to use them. If you have 3D Touch disabled or have an iPhone without 3D Touch such as an iPhone 5S, 6, 6 Plus, or SE, you can just long-press on any icons to perform the same actions.Don't Miss: iOS 11.3 Update Ruins 3D Touch on iPhones

1: On Home Screen App IconsThe home screen is littered with 3D Touch potential. Most apps utilize "Quick Actions" via a 3D Touch on their home screen app icon, but nearly all of Apple's stock apps incorporate the feature. These Quick Actions let you do things in the apps themselves faster and with fewer steps involved. To keep things brief, we'll mention the app name below with all its Quick Actions that are available.App Store — Purchased; Redeem; Search; Update All (if updates available) Calculator — Copy Last Result Calendar — Widget; Add Event Camera — Take Selfie; Record Video; Record Slo-mo; Take Portrait Clock — Create Alarm; Start/Stop/Resume Stopwatch; Start/Stop/Resume Timer Compass — Compass; Level Contacts — Favorites Widget; Create New Contact FaceTime — Favorites Widget Feedback — New Feedback Files — Widget Find My Friends — Widget; Share My Location Find My iPhone — Play a Sound (for each device listed) Folders — Rename; List of apps within that have notification badges (tap to open) Health — Medical ID; Today Home — Varies depending on your connected smart home devices iBooks — Search iBooks Store; List of recent books iTunes Store — Purchased; View Downloads; Redeem; Search Mail — Widget; New Message; Search; VIP; Inbox or All Inboxes (if you have more than one inbox) Maps — Widget; Make My Location; Send My Location; Search Nearby Messages — New Messages; List of recent messages Music — Widget; Search; Radio stations News — Widget; For You; Favorited news source(s) Notes — Widget; New Note; New Checklist; New Photo; New Sketch Phone — Favorites Widget; View Most Recent Voicemail; Create New Contact; Search for Contact; View Most Recent Call Photos — Favorites Widget; Most Recent; Favorites; Search; One Year Ago (or other time frames) Podcasts — Widget; Search; Check for New Episodes Reminders — Widget; New in Reminders; New in [your other folders] Safari — Show Reading List; Show Bookmarks; New Private Tab; New Tab Settings — Battery; Cellular Data; Wi-Fi; Bluetooth Tips — Widget TV — Widget; App Store; Purchased; Redeem; Search Voice Memos — New Recording; List of your recordings Wallet — Last Transaction; List of saved cards Watch — Pair Apple Watch Weather — Widget; Current Location; List of your saved locations; Add [new location] App Store (left), Camera (middle), and Maps (right). Third-party apps may or may not implement 3D Touch on their app icons, however, all will have one option by default: Share. When you view the Quick Actions on an app icon, you will see an option to share the app in question, regardless if the developer has added any 3D Touch support or not. It's just one way Apple makes sure most of the apps on your iPhone involve 3D Touch in some capacity (and gets more users downloading more apps!). Sharing VLC, which has no other Quick Actions besides the default.
2: In the Actual AppsAs previously said, each app is going to use 3D Touch in its own way. Some will fully embrace the feature, adding it to many different facets of its UI, while others will ignore it completely and act as if the function doesn't exist. Unfortunately, because of these wide differences, it's very difficult to cover how each individual app uses 3D Touch.

Peeking & PoppingWhat holds true throughout all apps is the way you use 3D Touch, specifically in two main functions — "peeking" and "popping." You can think of these two terms as "preview" and "open," respectively. When you peek, you to partially load and view something in iOS, most often a link, by lightly pressing into the display. To pop is a bit different, as you push more completely into the display to load that content entirely rather than just previewing it. Popping in Music (left) and peeking and popping in Safari (right).

Peek ActionsSome apps really go the extra mile for users, giving you a list of actions to choose from when peeking. To see if there are actions available, when you peek, slide your finger up the screen — if there's a menu that pops up underneath, the app has some peek actions available. Some apps even have swipe left and swipe right gestures when peeking!Notes gives you an options drawer when peeking, which lets you affect the note in question without actually having to open it. Mail does as well when peeking, but also lets you both archive and mark emails as read when swiping left and right (though, the actions depend on how you have your swipe gestures set up in Mail). Options drawer in Notes (left) and a variety of actions with Mail (right).

Peeking & Popping in SearchYou can even use peek and pop in Search. App icons work exactly as you'd think, so do links, photos, etc. What's new here is you can actually peek contacts, which gives you an array of options to choose from.

Viewing Live Photos3D Touch is how you view the live photos you've taken on your iPhone. In Photos, you can view any of your live photos in motion by pressing down firmly. If you lift up, it will reset, just as it does when set as a live wallpaper (more on that later). You can also view live photos this way in Messages, Mail, etc. When it comes down to it, utilizing 3D Touch is all about experimentation. Try peeking and popping links, photos, windows, graphs, threads ... anything you can think to try. Once you get a feel for the app's use of 3D Touch, you might just start incorporating it in ways you wouldn't have thought of. There's even pressure sensitivity you can play with, like in drawing apps that let you press hard for a thick line or soft for a thin line.Don't Miss: All the 3D Touch Tricks You Should Be Using in Safari for iPhone
3: In the Notification CenterThe revamped Notification Center in iOS 11 caused quite a bit of controversy upon its release. That being said, there are plenty of reasons to like this notification system, two of which are due to 3D Touch.

Peeking NotificationsYou can peek most, if not all, notifications on the lock screen. What you can do depends on the notification type and app they come from — some developers will fully integrate their notifications with 3D Touch, giving you appropriate and useful actions to choose from, while others will give you nothing. At the very least, peeping a notification places it in full view, blurring out the others so you can focus.

Clearing All NotificationsBe warned — this last feature will make you the envy of all non-3D Touch device owners. 3D Touch gives you the ability to clear all notifications on the lock screen. To clear all notifications, simply pop any (X) on the screen, then, tap "Clear All Notifications." Why Apple doesn't include this function as a long-press on non-3D Touch devices is a mystery we may never solve. But for the rest of us, we can declutter our lock screens in an instant. Don't Miss: How to Get the Most Out of iOS 11's New Notification Center

4: Launching the App SwitcherAlthough inexplicably removed during the iOS 11 beta, the 3D Touch app switching feature continues on as one of the iPhone's coolest gestures. While the iPhone X's multitasking swipe gestures essentially replace its 3D Touch companion, non-X users on iPhone 6S and up will find this feature indispensable. On the home screen — or while in an app — press firmly into the left edge of the display. When you feel the pop, you'll see a sliver of an app preview appear. You can either drag it across the display to open that app, effectively letting you switch back and forth between you last used apps, or pull it about halfway and let go to reveal the app switcher in its entirety. Alternatively, after the first pop, you can press firmly again to pop the switcher open. Popping open (left, half swipe (middle), and full-swipe to open (right).

5: Using the Keyboard as a TrackpadWhile there are plenty of great third-party keyboards out there (shout out to Gboard), 3D Touch makes a hard sell for Apple's proprietary board. You see, when you press firmly into the keyboard, it becomes a trackpad, allowing to move around your text like on a laptop.Better still, you can press in again at any point in the text to highlight it, then continue tracking to highlight as much as you'd like. Press in once more to cancel the highlight, but you'll have to let go and press in again to highlight. There are other keyboards out there besides Apple's default one (again, shout out to Gboard, who attempts to replicate this 3D Touch experience), but they all feel limited compared to what Apple has accomplished here. Try it out for yourself — it'll be hard to go back.Don't Miss: 18 Tips to Help You Master Gboard for Your iPhone

6: Viewing Live WallpapersLive wallpapers use 3D Touch to display moving images on your lock screen. Apple provides stock Live Wallpapers or you can use Live Photos to the same effect. You can set a live wallpaper by going to "Wallpaper" in the Settings app, selecting "Choose New Wallpaper," then "Live." To use a live photo, scroll down and tap "Live Photos" from the Choose menu.Once you have a live wallpaper in place, jump back to the lock screen (you can set it as your home screen wallpaper, too, but it won't animate there). Press down firmly into the display to activate the live effect. If using one of Apple's live wallpapers, you can pause the effect by lessening the intensity of your push. If you lift up, the effect begins to reverse. Live Photos won't play along, unfortunately, and will simply reset if you lift up at all.

7: On the Lock ScreenAt first glance, the lock screen looks just the same as the Notification Center, for the most part. New notifications will appear front and center, and you can swipe up on the screen to see the rest of them. You can use 3D Touch in these lock screen notifications just like you can in Notification Center, although some might require you to unlock your iPhone to complete.Of course, that also means you can clear all notifications here, as well as add live wallpapers. All of the Notification Center's unique 3D Touch tricks are here for you to use. Unfortunately, Today View does not incorporate 3D Touch whatsoever.iPhone X users take note: your flashlight and camera shortcuts use 3D Touch to activate. If you don't have this feature on, you won't see these options. iPhone X with 3D Touch enabled (left) and without (right). How To: Install MS-DOS on a Modern Computer

How To: Install MS-DOS on a Modern Computer
For those needing to replace old controller hardware on cutting mills, those into native retro gaming, or for those who want to see what all the fuss was about in the 1980's, or for those who just want a play with old but great technology, this tutorial shows you step-by-step processing getting the breakthrough desktop operating system running on the latest greatest hardware.
Step 1: PreparationFor this project, you will need the following:1 copy of MS-DOS 6.22 floppy diskette images1 computer1 install of Oracle VirtualBox (it's multiplatform, so chances are you can obtain this). This is a free virtualisation application.some free hard drive space.

Step 2: Set Up the EnvironmentCreate a new VM called DOS. Use the Wizard in VirtualBox, that's what it's there for.

Step 3: Set Up the Environment (Continued)Leave the Base Memory set at 32MB. It's enough for most things DOS, any higher and you will start to see weird errors.Set up a NEW HARD DISK with dynamically allocated size NOT MORE than 2.00GB. FAT (the filesystem which MS-DOS 6.22 uses) CANNOT handle volumes larger than this!Once this is all set up and the Wizard finished, you should have a nice pristine DOS VM ready to be populated.Locate your floppy disk images. You won't be needing them just yet, there's one more thing you need to do. Right click on your new VM and select "Settings". Go to Storage and add a floppy controller.
Step 4: Building the Appliance 1. Initial EnvironmentNext add a Floppy Device (click the disk next to the new controller that just popped up) and choose the first disk in the installation images when asked. Click OK and start the VM.As it's a DOS VM it will first look for a floppy controller from which to boot. It'll go through the motions to install and eventually will ask for Disk 2.Don't panic, here's what you do: go to Devices->Floppy Devices->Choose A Virtual Floppy Disk File and select Disk 2. Same procedure for Disk 3. When the VM asks you to restart, remember to remove the disk image from the virtual drive or it'll throw a non system disk error!By the end of it you'll have a very basic DOS environment, ready to go. If the restart causes the system messages to appear on one line at the top of the screen, simply reset the VM.The next thing to do, before you do ANYTHING ELSE, is to clone the VM as it sits, use the clone for testing software before you commit the installation process to the original VM (potentially BREAKING STUFF if it goes wrong!), this way if you break a fully populated VM instead of having to rebuild and remember how you did it, you can just simply clone a spare.

Step 5: Building the Appliance 2. Adding a CDROM DriverNext up, it's adding the CDROM driver. Simplest way (the only way at this point!) is to download a CDROM driver floppy image. Do a search for an OakCDROM floppy image, and load it like you did the DOS install images, then in your VM go to drive A: and xcopy all the files to your /DOS folder.Next step is to add this line to your CONFIG.SYS:DEVICEHIGH=C:\DOS\OAKCDROM.SYS /D:MSCD001Then add this to AUTOEXEC.BAT:LH C:\DOS\MSCDEX.EXE /:MSCD001Reset the VM. You should see a new drive (drive D:) pop up. You are now ready to install applications using CDROM images instead of swapping out floppy images!

Step 6: Adding StorageIMPORTANT caveat: Dblspace/Drvspace compression WILL NOT WORK on these appliance volumes, in fact attempting to deploy DxxSpace on a VirtualBox DOS appliance will BREAK IT. So please, don't ask me how to rescue a DxxSpace-broken appliance, because it cannot be done. This is why we have clones. Recovery is as simple as deleting the old broken clone and copying from the known-good spare (which I know you have!).This procedure is a lot simpler than adding a new hard drive. In fact, you don't even have to pop the cover on your computer! With the VM shut off, go into Settings->Storage and add another virtual hard disk (as shown). Click on "Create New Disk" and advance two screens. This is where you get to size it. Select Dynamically Allocated, and in the next screen adjust to 2.00GB or less (a reminder: DOS CANNOT handle a partition larger than 2.00GB). It might be an idea to give the new disk an identifiable label as well, like "DriveD". Hit Next then Create.Caveat: since this is a virtual appliance, you might be forgiven for thinking that you can just pile drive upon drive, but you need to remember that you're emulating an old APM system. The rules apply now as they did then: you cannot add more than four devices per IDE controller, and DOS does not support SATA in native mode (SATA in IDE mode works; VirtualBox seems to apply this mode automatically, so you can add more drives to a single SATA controller if you need to). So if you're trying to add more than four devices to the IDE controller, you're SOL; you'll have to add a SATA controller. My rule of thumb in this regard is: use a maximum of TWO IDE devices for virtual hard disks, add more via the SATA controller. Reserve the other two IDE device ports for the CDROM and things like Zip/Jaz drives, tape streamers, etc., that connect to the Host via the IDE interface or that you want DOS to access via the IDE interface. You now have a new drive in your VM, which you can access by starting the VM and running FDISK. Select Option 5 (change current fixed disk) and select disk 2. This will take you back to the main menu, where you can create a new partition and use the maximum available space on the volume to create a primary partition (this is the same as dedicating a standalone hard drive 2GB in size for storage on a single partition). To confirm this check the Partition Information and you should see something very close to what you see in the image. Exit FDisk, reset the VM then use the "Format d:" command to prepare the drive for use. As your storage needs increase, you can add up to 24 hard disk partitions total (including C:) before you run out of letters (after all, who really needs more than 48GB of space??), less if you have a CDROM driver installed.
Step 7: FootnotesSince MS-DOS is based on old APM BIOS technology, it's not 100% compatible with newer gear which these days uses EFI rather than Flash BIOS (ACPI). In essence, this causes the appliance to hog CPU resources since MS-DOS has zero concept of scheduling. The way around this is to install a program that resides in memory inside the appliance to throttle the CPU to the appliance. This also helps prevent crashes which can bring down the main system. Also, there are issues surrounding applications and games that use EMS; this can be gotten around by running them in an appliance running Microsoft Windows 95 OEM SR2 or 98/98SE.

Do you know anyone that's infatuated with themselves and is currently in need for some good speakers? No? Well, just in case you do, here's a neat Christmas present idea for your narcissistic speaker-less friend. Image via instructables.com But, let's be realistic—why would you make these for anybody but yourself?

How to Make Your Own Cardboard Bust SpeakersThese cardboard speakers, created by Instructables user damonite, are laser-cut cardboard replicas of his actual upper torso. To do this, he used an iPad and the Autodesk 123D Catch app to capture a 3D image rendering of his head. Image via instructables.com He then processed the images through the 123D Catch app and website. Image via instructables.com After this, he patched surface holes in the image using Rhino. He then exported the final patched-up model out of Rhino and went back to 123D and used "Stacked Slices" to create the different cardboard pieces. Image via instructables.com He then placed his pieces of cardboard in a laser cutter bed to be cut. Image via instructables.com Then, he disassembled his OrigAudio speakers, glued together his cardboard pieces, and fit the stripped speaker in through the cardboard, placing the speaker in the mouth area of the project. The project is time-consuming, but the end result is well worth it! How To: 8 Menu Bar Apps Every Mac Power User Needs

How To: 8 Menu Bar Apps Every Mac Power User Needs
The menu bar is a great place to perform quick searches, track battery life, and switch Wi-Fi networks on your Mac, but it can do way more than that if you let it. I've rounded up some menu apps below that not only have features that will boost your productivity, but are lightweight enough to run entirely from the menu bar.Don't Miss: 6 Tweaks You Should Be Using on Your Mac Right Now Don't Miss: 13 Terminal Commands Every Mac User Should Know The majority of these menu bar apps are available through the Mac App Store, but for the few that aren't, you will have to download either a .dmg or .zip file and install the apps manually. You might also need to adjust your security settings to allow some of these apps to run.

1. Easier Copy/Paste FunctionalityWith Clip Menu, you'll no longer need to worry about copy/pasting text or images one at a time. Instead, you'll have access to the ten most-recent clipboard entries, which you can copy directly from the Clip Menu icon in the menu bar.Download Clip Menu (.dmg)

2. Stupid-Fast Drive EjectingIf you are constantly mounting and unmounting drives from your Mac, you know how annoying it can be to go to each individual drive icon and click "Eject."Ejector makes the entire process a two-click procedure. All you have to do is click its menu bar icon and hit "Eject All" to unmount every peripheral drive connected to your Mac. Individual drives can also be unmounted if you'd rather not eject everything.Download Ejector (.dmg)

3. Better iTunes ControliTunes support apps are nothing new, but most of them only give you playback control shortcuts and they aren't always free. BarTunes, on the other hand, also gives you the ability to change a song's rating and displays the current song's album art for free.Install BarTunes from the Mac App Store

4. Quickly Organize & Use ScreenshotsI take loads of screenshots for articles and guides, and QuickShot is the best tool to help me keep track of them. Right when I take screenshot, it gets stored in the QuickShot menu bar popup, allowing me to easily drag-and-drop them anywhere I want, which makes sending emails or creating reports much easier.Install QuickShot from the Mac App Store

5. Safely Share Screen RecordingsWhen screenshots don't cut it when helping others troubleshoot, I usually have to send a quick video recording. This usually means recording a screencast, uploading it to a cloud service, then sending the link. But with Recordit, the entire process is automated.Once you click "Record" from the menu bar icon, the service will let you select a portion of the screen to record. Once you click "Stop," a link will be copied to your clipboard that can be shared with anyone. While this app is free, there is a $29.00 Pro version which allows you to remove the five-minute recording limit and add passwords to prevent strangers from watching them.Download Recordit (.zip) [the Mac App Store version is outdated]

6. Change Display Resolutions with a ClickFor those of you who use your Mac as media center and have projectors or external monitors hooked up, you know exactly how hard it can be to get the mirroring and resolution settings just right. To make this process a whole lot easier, you can use Display Menu, which gives you all the same options that come with the regular OS X Display menu bar icon, but with the added bonus of changing your main resolution at any time.Install Display Menu from the Mac App Store

7. Put Your Finder in the Menu BarThe Finder sidebar is a great way to quickly navigate to your favorite folders, but with XMenu, you get the same functionality built into your menu bar.By default, you will only be able to add predefined directories, but if you open the preferences, you can enable a user-defined XMenu. With that enabled, open up your Home folder, then go to /Library/Application Support/XMenu/Custom and begin dropping aliases of your favorite apps, folders, and documents. Those will be available from the XMenu with a cog icon.Install XMenu from the Mac App Store If you created a custom XMenu, you would have also noticed a Snippets category, which can store text files that can be copied to your clipboard similar to the way ClipMenu works.

More often than not I default to Uber because I can do 12 rides in one day without pushing myself harder than I'm willing to. I don't avoid Lyft per se, but if I have a request coming through from both at the same time, I will take the Uber just so I can get that much closer to reaching my quest since that equals free money.

CarPlay units usually have eight app icons on each home screen page, so there's not a lot of room for your favorites apps without having to swipe — unless you have a bigger screen. Even then, a car that can display 10 apps on each screen might still need some app prioritization to get your most used apps up front and center.

How To: Enable the Hidden Notification LED on Your Nexus 6

How To: Enable the Hidden Notification LED on Your Nexus 6
The Nexus 6 uses an Ambient Display notification system that was heavily inspired by the Active Display feature on the Moto X. Essentially, the device shows a black-and-white version of the lock screen whenever you receive a new notification or pick the phone up. This is all made possible by the N6's AMOLED display that doesn't have to waste any battery to power black pixels on the screen. But there are a few drawbacks to this system—most notably its predisposition to pocket dial your contacts when the phone misinterprets movement as someone picking it up. So many users have disabled the feature in Settings, but this leaves you without any notification indicator at all.Amazingly enough, though, there is a full RGB notification LED built into the phablet—it's just not in use. Hidden under the device's top speaker, this LED light can be activated for use in alerting you to missed notifications as long as you're rooted. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

Step 1: Install Light FlowAt the moment, the only app that is capable of unlocking this hidden LED light is the paid version of Reactle's app, Light Flow. The app will run you $2.49—about as much as a cheap cup of coffee—so consider that before proceeding.

Step 2: Enable Root OptionsBefore you can configure the various notification-specific options that Light Flow has to offer, you'll need to enable a few settings that are exclusive to rooted users. From Light Flow's side navigation menu, tap Settings, then Device Settings and Root. From here, tick the box next to Root Mode, then tap Grant on the Superuser Access request. Next up, enable the Run every command as root option, then tick the box next to Direct Mode and press Yes on the popup. Light Flow will close itself out after you enable Direct Mode, so you'll have to open it back up to finish setup.

Step 3: Configure Notification Option in Light FlowLight Flow's main purpose is to allow for app-specific notification control. This includes LED color and sound options, but these features require that you enable the app's Notification Access plugin. When you relaunch Light Flow after enabling the root options, you'll see a message asking you to enable this feature. Tap the Set Up button on this message, then tick the box next to Light Flow on the next screen and press OK on the popup. After backing out to Light Flow again, use the side navigation menu to head to Notification Settings. You'll be presented with a list of the apps installed on your system that most commonly post notifications. Each app can have its own notification settings like LED Color and Sound. If there's an app that you'd like to set up that's not already listed, tap the + button at the bottom of the screen to add it. Otherwise, use the three-dot menu button next to any app to select Settings, then swipe over to the Light tab. Some options are unavailable on the Nexus 6, but you can change the Notification Color option to fit your liking. If you'd like to test out an app's settings, tap the three-dot menu button at the top of the screen and press Test. Light Flow is not capable of making the LED light in the Nexus 6 blink intermittently, so the previously-hidden light will stay on until you dismiss the corresponding button. But this is a great improvement over no notification indicator at all, and for a few bucks, Light Flow is an incredible value. How surprised were you to see that notification light glowing at the top of your brand new Nexus 6? Tell us about it in the comment section below, or drop us a line on our Twitter or Facebook feeds.
